A stunning and worthy sequel that refines everything the original did so well
I was a massive fan of the original Planet of Lana. I discovered it one night in my Steam family library, gave it a try, and instantly fell in love. So when I heard a sequel was on the way, I was genuinely excited. I picked it up on release day and dove straight in.
To say Planet of Lana 2 is an incredible and worthy sequel would be an understatement.
The game is absolutely gorgeous, taking the beautiful hand-painted style of the first game and refining it even further. The visuals are breathtaking from start to finish.
Story & Connection to the Original
Set a few years after the events of the first game, the story is heavily tied to the original. While there is a short recap at the beginning, it doesn’t fully do it justice. I strongly recommend playing the first Planet of Lana before jumping into the sequel — you’ll appreciate and understand the story much more deeply if you do.
The journey begins when a young girl in the village falls ill. You’re tasked with finding the ingredients needed to create a cure, setting off on a new adventure across a variety of stunning biomes — from snowy landscapes and windswept forests to massive industrial mines and towering mechanical structures.
Gameplay & Puzzle Design
The platforming and puzzling are noticeably improved over the first game (which was already excellent). New mechanics are a welcome addition, including controlling robots, using small fish, directing flying water-carrying creatures with tiny wings, and working with little tinder-like creatures that help you set things on fire. These fresh tools open up exciting new puzzle possibilities.
The puzzles are challenging but never overly difficult. Many require lateral thinking, giving you that satisfying “aha!” moment when the solution clicks. There is no combat in the series, so the entire experience focuses on thoughtful puzzle-platforming and precise timing — making it perfect for a relaxed, immersive playthrough.
Story, Characters & Voice Acting
The story dives into darker themes than the first game while still remaining wonderful. Character development takes center stage, and you even get to experience Mui’s backstory, which was one of the highlights for me. It provided fantastic insight and emotional depth, even tying beautifully into events from the original game.
A big part of the magic comes from the voice acting — or rather, the lack of a real spoken language. Every character speaks in a made-up language, which leaves everything open to personal interpretation. I found myself inventing my own narratives during cutscenes, trying to decipher emotions through tone, inflection, and expression. This unique approach adds an incredibly magical and personal layer to the entire experience.
Final Dad Verdict
Planet of Lana 2 is a beautiful, heartfelt sequel that successfully builds on everything that made the first game special. With its stunning visuals, clever puzzle design, emotional storytelling, and relaxing gameplay, it’s a must-play for fans of cinematic puzzle-platformers.
If you loved the original, this sequel more than delivers. Just make sure you play the first game beforehand to get the full emotional impact.
