A heartwarming, kid-friendly puzzle adventure about hope, loss, and helping others

I played The Last Campfire with my daughter, and it turned out to be one of the most wholesome and meaningful co-op experiences we've shared. This is an incredibly kid-friendly game that still offers enough depth to keep adults engaged.

You play as a small lost Ember — a cute burlap-sack-like creature — navigating a mysterious, beautiful world while helping other lost souls called the Forlorn regain their inner flame and continue their journey.

Gameplay & Puzzles

The puzzles are excellent for playing together. They’re fun and varied without ever becoming overly difficult — my daughter was able to contribute to almost every one, and a few gave us just the right amount of gentle challenge to feel rewarding when we solved them. The game is also very easy to 100%, which is perfect for completionists who don’t want endless frustration.

There’s no combat or scary moments, just thoughtful puzzle-solving, exploration, and light platforming. Everything feels relaxed and inviting.

Art, Characters & Atmosphere

The art style is gorgeous — whimsical, colourful, and full of personality. The characters are adorable, and the world feels like a living storybook. Every environment has its own charm, from peaceful forests to misty marshes, all bathed in warm, comforting lighting.

Story & Deeper Themes

On the surface, it’s a wonderful little story about helping others and finding your way home. But beneath that cute exterior lies real emotional depth. The game explores themes of hope in the face of darkness, loneliness, loss, grief, and the importance of community and perseverance. The Forlorn represent souls who have become stuck because they lost hope — and by solving puzzles in their minds, you help them find the strength to move forward.

Playing it with my daughter made these themes even more special. We talked about the characters’ feelings, why they got stuck, and how helping others can also help you on your own journey. It sparked some lovely conversations without ever feeling heavy or inappropriate for younger players.

Final Dad Verdict

The Last Campfire is a short but memorable gem from Hello Games that perfectly balances charm, clever puzzles, and heartfelt storytelling. It’s one of the best “play together” games I’ve experienced — relaxing enough for calm evenings, meaningful enough to stick with you, and beautiful enough to admire at every turn.

If you’re looking for a wholesome, non-violent puzzle adventure to enjoy with your kids (or even by yourself), this is an absolute must-play. Highly recommended.
